I have dropshipped on another eCommerce platform before and learned some very important lessons.

Drop Shipping on eBay
When I first tried my hand at dropshipping, I started off using eBay. I found a dropshipping supplier for outdoor sporting goods.
Keep in mind this was many years ago but what I experienced then is still relevant today.
I was excited about dropshipping because I didn’t have to worry about tying up my money in inventory that I wasn’t sure would sell.
Besides that, I didn’t have very much of a budget to begin with so being able to sell the supplier’s inventory on eBay was awesome.
The supplier had some restrictions on the higher end stuff like expensive watches. I wasn’t allowed to post them on eBay.

Getting started with dropshipping is easier today than it was back then. In the past, it was difficult to locate a legitimate dropshipping supplier.
Today, many dropshippers utilize sources such as AliExpress.com.
While AliExpress is an awesome resource, don’t get too excited about posting their items on eBay.
AliExpress is a huge online retailer that is made up of mostly merchants in China. Many of those same merchants are also selling on eBay.
Whatever product you want to sell on eBay is likely already being sold by the very suppliers you would be ordering from.
This makes it difficult to compete which makes it difficult to obtain conversions. Not to mention that many of these sellers are power sellers themselves.
That means that your listings probably won’t be seen amongst all of the other sellers without you paying eBay to make your listing stand out.
Even if you were to find a dropshipping supplier that had products no one is selling a lot of, you will still deal with fees.
eBay has listing fees as well as fees when an item sells. You also have to pay PayPal fees when items sell.
These fees add up quickly even for dropshippers.
Drop Shipping on Amazon
Attempting to dropship on Amazon is not any easier. In fact, I consider it to be more difficult.
That is because Amazon has its own set of rules pertaining to dropshipping. Here they are in a nutshell:
- You must be the seller of record for all of your products
- You must identify yourself as the seller on all packing slips and any other information related to the item
- Be responsible for accepting and processing all customer returns
- Comply with all Amazon seller policies
I recommend reading the Amazon drop shipping policy yourself.
Amazon fees are high. There is a 10-15% seller’s fee on top of every item you sell. That can really eat into your profit margin.
Open Your Own Drop Shipping Store
You are much better off opening your own dropshipping store in my opinion. Why deal with exorbitant fees, tremendous competition, and restrictions?
